A man with an address in County Roscommon was shot in the leg in Athlone over the weekend.
The man is in his 20s and according to media reports was not deliberately targeted, however, gardaí are keeping an open mind in their investigations. The man was shot in the lower leg in the Athlone town area at around 9.40.p.m. on Saturday night.
He was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, where he was treated for minor injuries. He has since been released.
According to media reports, a juvenile discovered a rifle in a parked car, at Retreat Road in the town, at 9.40 p.m.. The juvenile male picked it up and it was discharged – sending a shot up the road where it hit the man who was walking nearby.
The juvenile male who was holding the gun was arrested in relation to the incident. As of yesterday morning he was still being detained at Athlone garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.
Gardaí said the investigation is at an early stage and they are keeping an open mind. They are not currently treating the incident as accidental.
