There is sadness in the greater Frenchpark and Ballaghaderreen areas following the death of 19-year-old Stephen O’Gara. He died at the weekend following a fatal accident while on holidays in Spain.

Stephen was holidaying in Lanzarote when he was involved in a fatal quad-bike or moped incident on Friday.

The deceased was a native of Aughurine, Moyne, Ballaghaderreen. He was in the Spanish resort with family members and had only arrived last Thursday.

An only child, the deceased is survived by his mother Maureen, who runs the well-known local catering company, Gairdín Bia, and an extended network of family and friends.

Local reaction has been one of shock and disbelief since news of the tragedy broke.

Parish Priest of Frenchpark, Fr Micheál Donnelly described Stephen “as a lovely, lovely lad who was very hard- working and down to earth. There’s a complete sadness, one could say an awful sadness, in the area” said Fr Donnelly who expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family.

Stephen was a past pupil of St Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen, and was a trainee carpenter in Galway.
