There are just five respite beds in Co Roscommon and the HSE has accepted that more are probably needed.

At last week’s HSE West Regional Health Forum, Cllr Tony Ward said he was concerned that there were only five respite beds available.

He said that just two beds, located at the Sacred Heart Hospital, served South Roscommon and the county town.

There were another two in the Plunkett Community Nursing Unit in Boyle and just one at Aras Mhathair Phoil, Castlerea.

Head of Community Care Tony Canavan said that respite beds allowed families and carers a break from providing care to loved ones.

He said that while there were other beds in the county, such as convalescent beds for people who might be leaving hospital, he agreed that more respite beds were needed.
