The community in the greater Ballinasloe area is in mourning after a road traffic accident claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl on Easter Sunday morning.

The dead girl has been named locally as Bridget Ward of Creggane, Ballinasloe, which is located approximately 3km from the town.

The girl’s brother, named locally as Patrick Ward, was injured in the incident but is believed to be in a stable condition at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

The collision occurred on Easter Sunday, April 22nd, at approximately 11.55 a.m. on the R358 Ballinasloe to Ahascragh Road. The car involved in the collision overturned in the incident but the driver of the vehicle escaped uninjured.

Both children were taken to Portiuncula Hospital where Bridget was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to this incident to contact Ballinasloe Garda Station on 0909 631890.

Local Councillor Michael Finnerty said the community was deeply saddened as a result of the accident.

“The family is well-known in the community. It’s an appalling tragedy. Thankfully the little fella is improving, but it’s an awful shock for the family.

“The area where the accident occurred is a straight stretch of road. It’s not an accident blackspot. It was a lovely Easter morning, it was the last thing you’d expect to happen on such a day.

“I have to pay tribute to the emergency services, who mobilised and were at the scene very quickly and were wonderful in attending to the scene,” said Councillor Finnerty.
