Gardai have been carrying out speed checks around the country as part of National Slow Down Day.

While Tulsk was on the radar for most of the day in relation to motorists being found exceeding the speed limit the focus has now switched to Ballaghaderreen.

This evening a motorist was detected driving at 59km/h in a 50km/h Zone on the R293 in Ballaghaderreen.

This afternoon, a driver was detected doing 82 km per hour in a 50 km per hour zone on the N5 at Carrownageelaun, Tulsk. Earlier this morning, a driver was detected doing 60 km per hour on the same stretch of road.


Since 7 a.m. GoSafe has checked the speed of 104,821 vehicles with 910 vehicles detected travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.


As part of National Slow Down Day, An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority are continuing to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, and are urging motorists to drive carefully and to abide by the speed limits.


The next update from Gardai will be issued tomorrow morning at 7.30 a.m.
