Work on a new walking route and outdoor gym in Somers Park in Castlerea is to begin in a few days time, Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Paschal Fitzmaurice, has confirmed.
Funding for the walkway and 12 adult exercise machines was secured earlier this year by the Castlerea Town Team in conjunction with the council from the Rural Regeneration Scheme and Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. The team have also received funding from the Rural Recreation Officer for a bicycle rack.
Cllr Fitzmaurice thanked those involved in bringing the “exciting” project to life.
“It has been in the works for the last two years… The Town Team and the council have done great work on the project,” he said.
It is hoped that the project will bring an intergenerational element to the park, where parents or grandparents can make use of the adult exercise machines while children enjoy the park’s playground.
“It is also a mini-tourism project. This is not just for the people of Castlerea but we are hoping people from the whole of west Roscommon will come to enjoy it,” he said.
“I am hopeful we can get more funding later this year to bring more outdoor activities to this lovely area,” he said.
“We are also hoping to try to develop more of that area into some more outdoor play recreation projects. We are trying to create a very strong outdoor area. We also believe that this will bring more people into the town and there is a good chance of an economic spin-off,” he added.
