Planning permission has been granted for Ballaghaderreen GAA Club to construct an all-weather 3G playing field at its premises.
The club also has permission to install LED floodlighting for use between 9am and 10pm each day. The proposed floodlighting must be designed and orientated to minimise glare and light pollution, the planning inspector wrote.
The pitch, surrounded by a five-metre high mesh fence, will be 60 metres by 40 metres. It will sit next to the club’s two existing grass pitches.
On behalf of Ballaghaderreen GAA Club, architect Tom Regan said it is hoped the playing surface will “contribute further to the local community’s ability to access sports and recreation facilities”.
In the planning application, he said younger members of the community in particular stand to benefit as they might not be able to use grass pitches al year-round.
“The use of the current grass playing surfaces is significantly diminished during long spells of poor weather,” he added.
