A Roscommon Town resident has lauded the massive voluntary effort that is helping restore his house, which was badly damaged by fire last month, in time for Christmas.

Tom Hill, widely known a T Hill, escaped injury when a fire broke out at his home in the Henry Street/Circular Road area of Roscommon Town on October 25th.

Within days of the blaze, friends, neighbours, residents of the town, and members of Roscommon Fire Brigade came together to work on restoring Tom’s home.

The group of around 30 volunteers set themselves an ambitious target, aiming to complete the repairs by December 24th so that Tom could celebrate Christmas Day at his own kitchen table.

That restoration is now nearing completion, thanks to the huge voluntary response, meaning that the popular painter and decorator is on track to spend Christmas in the comfort of his own house.

This week, Tom has commended the voluntary effort, led by co-ordinator Gerry Dervin, declaring that he has “the greatest neighbours in the world.”

Locals, business people and the general public have funded the renovations through a GoFundMe campaign (The Tom Hill Restoration Fund) organised by the local restoration committee.

Volunteers have been doing shifts on the site since the fire, and have been careful to ensure social distancing and public health guidelines are being followed.

Tom’s house needed rewiring, replumbing, a new heating system, flooring, and doors and windows, as well as painting and decorating. All the furniture has had to be replaced.

But, thanks to a massive voluntary efforts, T Hill looked destined to spend Christmas in his own home.
