Castlerea native Dr Keith Swanick said he was “delighted and privileged” to receive the first dose of the Covid vaccine yesterday. The Belmullet GP received the vaccine at the Áras Deirbhle Nursing Unit where the vaccine was given to staff and residents.

Speaking to the Takemeshnap Facebook page, Dr Swanick thanked the HSE for prioritising healthcare workers in Belmullet.

“As you know we had one of the highest 14-day incidences. One in 50 people in the community had the virus. In order for us as healthcare workers to protect vulnerable people in residential settings like Áras Deirbhle or in the community, we need to be vaccinated.”

He said that by working in solidarity as a community, “we will succeed in suppressing this virus”.

“We must remember that this virus is not a straight forward common cold. It is a serious illness that can kill us. So please show solidarity. Work together and help suppress the virus”
