East Mayo Athletics Club is hosting a run in memory of Detective Garda Colm Horkan on February 14th.
The virtual event means that people all over the world can remember the detective garda who died while responding to an incident in Castlerea on June 17th last and to raise funds for the GAA club close to his heart.
Members of the Irish Defence Forces 62nd Infantry suggested the fundraiser and they will take to the roads at their base in Camp Faouar in Syria on the same date.
“We thank them for their generosity and efforts and look forward to running virtually alongside them on the day,” said organisers.
Those who sign up for the event will receive a custom made medal in memory of Gda Horkan, who was fondly known as ‘The Bear’ and custom designed t-shirts are also available to purchase.
Monies raised from the event will go towards the development of the Colm Horkan Memorial Pitch, an all-weather floodlit pitch at Charlestown GAA Club, and community walkways.
“It will be a fitting legacy for the great man and a facility for the community to enjoy for generations to come,” the organisers said
