The first named storm this winter — Storm Arwen — is forecast to hit Ireland and the UK on Friday night and early Saturday.

Ulster counties will bear the brunt of the storm but will be windy everywhere for a time.

There is currently a Status Yellow wind warning in place for Ulster counties but this is expected to be updated this morning.

As the storm moves down from the north, it will introduce bitterly cold conditions for the weekend, with a significant windchill factor across the country and a chance of snow showers on higher ground.
