A Roscommon soccer star has capped a memorable year with an NCAA National Championship title after her Florida State University side emerged triumphant in a dramatic penalty shootout earlier this week.

Creagh native Heather Payne helped Florida State University to win its third-ever NCAA Women’s National Championship title after a dramatic penalty shootout against BYU in Santa Clare, California on Monday.

The Republic of Ireland star buried her spot-kick as the Seminoles overcame their opponents 4-3 in the shootout after it finished 0-0 after extra-time.

It added to what has been a great year for the Creagh woman, as she was named PFA Ireland International Women’s Player of the Year on Friday night and she has gone from strength to strength in Vera Pauw’s Republic of Ireland side.
