The long-serving principal of a West Roscommon primary is to retire early, it has been confirmed.

Geraldine Kelly, principal of Ballinlough NS is to take early retirement from the school that she has worked in for more than 20 years. She joined the teaching staff in 2000 and took up the role of principal in 2005.

Confirmation of the decision was made on the school’s social media account in recent days.

“Geraldine has worked at this school since September 2000, taking up the role of principal in 2005. Ms Kelly has made the decision to retire early, with effect from 31/08/22.  Ms Jordan will take up the role of principal on 01/09/22. Ms Kelly assures us that she will be happy to return for some substitute work, all being well, later in the autumn.”

Several former students and those associated with the school over the years wished Ms Kelly well in her retirement and thanked her for her dedication to the students.

“Your years in Ballinlough NS spent caring for and teaching the children with kindness and passion have helped make the school what it is today. I have no doubt that the school is being left in very safe hands with Ms Jordan who will continue with all the hard work you have both put in especially over the past few years,” wrote one person. Another commented that Ms Kelly “was an excellent principal and a great teacher. She always made the children feel happy and she made the school feel like a home from home.”
