The Fine Gael Ard Fheis, which got underway in Athlone this morning, comes just weeks before Tánaiste Leo Varadkar takes over the role as Taoiseach for the second time.

The party conference at TUS Athlone, the first in-person Ard Fheis since 2019, will dicuss a range of issues with Rural Ireland and the cost of living crisis topping the agenda.

One of the motions before delegates is from the Ballinasloe Fine Gael Branch in Roscommon-Galway calling for the re-opening of Lanesboro and Shannonbridge power stations.

Mr Varadkar will deliver his keynote address at 6.30pm.
