A County Roscommon school marked International Women’s Day in style when its senior rugby team won its first Connacht title on Wednesday afternoon.
The Convent of Mercy, Roscommon Town, defeated Mount St. Michael, Claremorris, 39-29, in a thrilling Connacht Senior League final at the Sportsground in Galway, having trailed by ten points at half time.
The team, coached by Dave Purcell and Micheál Glennon, pulled out all the stops in the second half, helped by a hat-trick of tries from Shauna Walsh. Roisín Maher scored a couple of tries, while Sarah Purcell and Eabha Dowd also crossed the whitewash.
The girls’ success made national newspaper headlines on Thursday morning as the Irish Times carried a front-page photograph of the historic triumph.
