Tributes have been paid to a popular club and county ladies’ football official who has been described as “a gifted lady whose natural instinct was kindness and generosity towards others.”
Aileen Daly (née Kelly) of Clooncoose, Cootehall, County Roscommon and formerly of Lavally, Tuam, County Galway, passed away today, Thursday, May 25th, peacefully, surrounded by her devoted husband and family, and in the tender care of the nurses and staff at North West Hospice, Sligo.
She was the chairperson of St. Michael’s LGFA and sitting secretary of Roscommon LFGA who described her as “a role model to everybody.”
In a tribute on Thursday evening, Roscommon LGFA outlined how Aileen had devoted her time, energy and knowledge to ladies’ football in her club and county for numerous years.
“A lady in the prime of her life, with so much still to impart to those around her,” said the statement.
“She was a gifted lady whose natural instinct was kindness and generosity towards others. Aileen dedicated herself to whatever position she was involved with, be it fixtures, assistant secretary or county secretary.”
In expressing its sympathy to her husband, Kevin; son, Jack; daughters, Miryam and Ellen and her wider family, Roscommon LGFA assured them that Aileen “was a lady and dedicated role model of whom you can all be proud, and our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult and heart-breaking time.
“Meeting Aileen you were guaranteed to be greeted with an hello and a warm welcome, which touched everyone she came in contact with. Her genuine and professional manner endeared her to all her family, friends, and the sporting world and beyond.
“Aileen worked hard all her life, dedicating herself to the job in hand, whether work-related, Leitrim County Council, or to ladies’ football where her enthusiasm for the sport was evident to everyone,” concluded the statement.
St. Michael’s GAA Club asked everyone to keep the Daly family in their thoughts. As a mark of respect, the club advised that all club activity will be cancelled until Saturday afternoon.
The late Aileen Daly is survived by her beloved husband, Kevin; son, Jack; daughters, Miryam and Ellen; brothers, John, James, David and Kenny; sisters, Kathleen, Maresa and Martina; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, work colleagues and her wide circle of friends.
Aileen will repose at Shivnan’s Funeral Home, Ballyfarnon on Friday evening, May 26th, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.. Removal from her home on Saturday morning to St. Michael’s Church, Cootehall, arriving for Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon, followed by interment afterwards in Ardcarne Cemetery.
