Roscommon Herald Deputy Editor Richard Canny is presented with a Headline Mental Health Media Award.

Roscommon Herald Deputy Editor Richard Canny has this afternoon won a national media award.

Richard won the national award in the Local Print and Online category of the Headline Mental Health Awards at a function in Dublin this afternoon.

He won the award for an article entitled, “I didn’t think I’d make it to my 15th birthday, but now I am studying law’. The piece was an interview with Latisha McCrudden and published earlier this year in the Roscommon Herald.

Roscommon Herald Editor Christina McHugh has congratulated Richard on the award. “This is well deserved,” she said.

“We are delighted for Richard. It is a reflection of his hard work and dedication to his job. We also thank Latisha for being brave enough to speak out and to entrust Richard and the Roscommon Herald with telling her story.

"The winning of this award shows the importance of quality, local journalism and the part it plays in community life. Local journalism is all about connecting with people. In a world where we all have news at our fingertips, the relevance of local newspapers is often questioned in today’s society, but this award for Richard proves that local journalism matters,” said Christina.

Christina added that the award for Richard follows a Local Ireland Sports Journalist of the Year award for Sports Editor Ian Cooney and the shortlisting of journalist James Fogarty for a News Journalist of the Year award.
