A young girl has been seriously injured in a road crash in County Westmeath.

A young girl has been seriously injured in a road crash in County Westmeath.

The six-year-old was a passenger in a car involved in the single-vehicle incident on the M6 eastbound between Junction 4 (Tyrellspass) and Junction 3 (Rochfortbridge) at around 4 p.m. on Thursday

The girl was taken to Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street for treatment.

Gardaí said no other serious injures were reported from the incident.

The M6 eastbound between Junction 3 and 4 has been closed to traffic, and is expected to remain so for much of this morning, Friday while a technical examination of the scene is carried out.

Local diversions have been put in place.
