TY students at local secondary school win prestigious language award

Minister for Education, Norma Foley, TD, presents students from Our Lady's Bower (l-r) Teresa Detoche, Hannah Murray, Ella Scullion, Cindy Zhang, Eilish Breheny and Mia Daly with their award for winning the #ThinkLanguages Champion Team of the Year competition.

A local secondary school hit the jackpot this afternoon when its Transition Year students won a prestigious national language award.

The students at Our Lady’s Bower, Athlone, were crowned the winners of the #ThinkLanguages Champion Team of the Year competition.

The school was one of 180 schools from around the country to enter the initiative which is part Languages Connect, Ireland’s strategy for Foreign Languages in Education 2017-2026.

The initiative aims to diversify the range of foreign languages taught and learned across the education system.

The award recognises the contribution of students to the promotion of the many personal, professional and social benefits of foreign language skills during #ThinkLanguages week.

Students Eilish Breheny, Cindy Zhang, Teresa Detoche, Ella Scullion, Hannah Murray and Mia Daly, alongside their teacher and County Roscommon native, Ms Rebecca Mooney, attended this afternoon’s national final at The Clock Tower in the Department of Education where they were unveiled as overall winners, beating off finalists Killarney Community College and Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School, Waterford.

Minister for Education, Norma Foley, TD, was in attendance to congratulate Our Lady Bower’s students who won the top prize of a trip to Brussels.

The #ThinkLanguages Champion of the Year competition runs alongside the annual #ThinkLanguages festival, which was celebrated by over 15,000 TY students across the country during the week of November 28th to December 1st.

The award has crowned off a memorable week for Our Lady's Bower, with the school's Cadette girls' volleyball team crowned All-Ireland champions on Tuesday.
